1. Giving faithfully.

Generosity begins when we acknowledge that God is the rightful owner of all things (Psalm 24:1). We own nothing; we are merely stewards of His resources. Our responsibility is to faithfully manage all that God has entrusted to us.

 

2. Giving purposefully.

In 2 Corinthians 9:6-15, Paul expounds on the law of sowing and reaping. God causes His blessings to abound in us so that we can be generous toward others as His love and grace flow through us.

 

3. Giving proportionately.

In the first tithing described in the Bible, Abraham gave Melchizedek a tenth of everything he had (Genesis 14:20). While Jesus Himself endorsed percentage giving (Matthew 23:23), what He desires is for our hearts to be in the right place. He tells us, “Where your heart is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). Our motivation in every aspect of life must be love and obedience (Philippians 2:1-13).   

 

4. Giving joyfully.

Biblical generosity is the joyous response of a heart filled with gratitude to God. The churches of Macedonia lived in extreme poverty, yet their overflowing joy welled up in rich generosity (2 Corinthians 8:1-5). We gain a measure of enjoyment knowing that our giving will meet the needs of the Lord’s work and other people.

 

5. Giving worshipfully.

Giving is an act of worship. Giving consistently demonstrates that we recognize the Lordship of Christ in our lives.
